Spain’s Top Cider Makers Tap Telos Blockchain for Supply Chain Transparency

Telos, one of the most active blockchain platforms in the world according to Blocktivity and CryptoDiffer, today announced that two of Spain’s largest cider makers are using the Telos blockchain for supply chain transparency. Spanish cider makers Sidra Menéndez S.L. and Llagar Castañón S.L are now using Telos to record the traceability data of their premium cider, allowing consumers to trace the origins of each bottle using the SidraDOP app to scan a QR code on the back of each bottle. Examples can be found here and here.

The Spanish region of Asturias is Europe’s fourth largest producer of cider, and accounts for 80 percent of Spain’s national cider production. The region is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for cider, meaning its bottles must feature labels issued by a regulatory board. The Regulatory Board of PDO Sidra de Asturias worked with The Telescope, a Telos block producer, to onboard these award-winning cider makers. Sidra Menéndez and Llagar Castañón have already registered the first batches of their ciders on the Telos blockchain. By tracking every step of production on Telos, cider makers are able to protect against counterfeits and over-production.

“Cider is one of Spain’s most prized beverages, made from designated apple varieties that place it under the European Union’s PDO, or Protected Designation of Origin. This means that every part of these ciders’ production and processing must take place in this specific Asturias region,”  said Luis Meijueiro of The Telescope. “Spain’s cider industry has faced challenges as some producers import apples from outside the region to make imitation ciders. We decided to leverage the Telos blockchain to come up with a solution that would ensure the integrity of Spanish cider, helping it to gain consumer confidence and global market share. When consumers trust where their goods are coming from, they are willing to pay more for that quality.”

Under the supervision of cider regulators, all parties register their activity data on the Telos blockchain, including apple producers, cider makers, beverage distributors, and sellers. Using the SidraDOP application, anyone can pull up the history of each bottle, including the types of apples used and when it was delivered. A link also provides the raw transaction data stored on the Telos blockchain registry.

“Tracking cider production is an excellent example of the many ways Telos can help solve challenges in supply chain management, agriculture, and consumer goods,” said Douglas Horn, Chief Architect of the Telos Blockchain. “Telos  continues to gain traction in enterprise applications with value adding solutions to real world problems. Telescope has been a long term contributor to Telos, and we will continue to work with them to maximize the value of SidraDOP and expand this type of solution to other industries.”
