Over half of young people would refuse to work for a company with a significant gender pay gap
Over half of young people would refuse to work for a company that has reported a large gender pay gap, according to new research from Young Enterprise (YE), the leading business and enterprise education charity.
The findings are contained in a new report published today entitled ‘The Gender Pay Divide: A Young Person’s Perspective’, which highlights for the first-time young people’s attitudes towards the gender pay gap. The report contains polling of over 200 young entrepreneurs from all regions of the UK who took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme (supported by HSBC UK), as well as in-depth interviews with the students.
When asked if they would feel comfortable working for a company which had a large gender pay gap, 54 per cent of young people stated they would refuse to work there. When divided by gender, 70 per cent of females stated they would refuse compared to 36 per cent of males.
The survey also found that 54 per cent of young people believe the gender pay gap will have an impact on their careers and a staggering 74 per cent of those questioned specified that they would not feel comfortable earning more than the opposite gender in the same role.
When asked what their most attractive incentives in a company are, a good salary topped the list with a zero-pay gap coming in a close second. Salary was an important aspect, with one in 10 pupils believing they will earn over £30,000 in their first job.
Michael Mercieca, Chief Executive, Young Enterprise comments: “It’s clear that the gender pay gap is now a make or break issue for employers. The next generation of young people clearly see it as a decisive factor in choosing their career path, so if companies want to attract the next generation of talent, they will need to start actively trying to reduce the pay divide as a matter of urgency.”
