Nexi and PayPal Expand Partnership to Boost Digital Commerce Across Europe

WHY THIS MATTERS: The expanded alliance between Nexi and PayPal signals a critical move toward simplified digital commerce across Europe. This isn’t just a deeper commercial agreement; it’s a structural realignment where one major Payment Service Provider (PSP) effectively absorbs the acceptance complexity of another global leader. The significance lies in reducing merchant friction. Small and medium businesses operating across fast-growing markets like the Nordics and Poland often struggle with managing disparate payment systems, impacting reconciliation and cash flow. By offering PayPal as a fully integrated option within a single Nexi platform, the partnership provides a powerful, unified tool for cross-border growth. This development is a clear win for merchant enablement, prioritizing ease of use and streamlined reporting over vendor complexity, which is essential for scaling in the competitive European digital landscape

Nexi, the European PayTech, and PayPal, the global leader in digital payments, today announced an expansion of their partnership. Building on a successful collaboration in Italy since 2016, the two companies are now extending their alliance across Europe to help businesses go digital faster and make payments easier for millions of customers.

At the heart of the expanded partnership is the integration of the PayPal ecosystem directly into Nexi’s platform for merchants. This allows Nexi to act as a collecting Payment Service Provider (PSP) for PayPal transactions, creating a single, streamlined experience for businesses. For PayPal, this marks a strategic step in strengthening its presence within the European payments ecosystem and broadening access to its solutions for merchants.

The rollout will start in fast-growing digital markets, including Italy, the Nordics (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland), and Poland. Merchants will benefit from a unified system that removes the friction of managing different platforms, helping small and medium businesses compete in the digital economy.

“We are excited to deepen our partnership with Nexi and offer our products to more merchants across Europe,” said Samba Natarajan, General Manager Europe at PayPal. “This collaboration strengthens our commitment to making digital payments simple and convenient.”

“Expanding our partnership with PayPal is a key step in building the leading European PayTech,” said Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer, Merchant Solutions at Nexi Group. “By integrating PayPal directly into our platform, we give merchants a powerful tool to grow their business through a simple, scalable digital solution.”

The integration of the PayPal ecosystem into Nexi’s platform brings concrete benefits to businesses:

  • Easy Onboarding: merchants can activate PayPal services through one simple process within Nexi’s platform.
  • Unified Fund Management: Payments and funds flow through a single system, reducing back-office work and improving cash flow visibility.
  • Simplified Reporting: Integrated reporting tools give businesses a complete view of all digital transactions in one place.

While the partnership expands across Europe, Italy continues to be a key market for innovation for both Nexi and PayPal. In the Italian market, the collaboration features a full integration of PayPal Checkout and PayPal Pay Later, aimed at increasing conversion rates by giving consumers greater flexibility at checkout, including instalment options of 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.

The partnership is also evolving to address the needs of modern consumers, exploring AI-powered payment experiences and new digital commerce models. Using these tools, Nexi and PayPal aim to anticipate market demands and create smooth, integrated digital journeys that support businesses in their digital transformation.
