Helen Bierton appointed Head of Retail Banking at Starling Bank
Starling Bank, the leading mobile-only bank, today announces the appointment of Helen Bierton as Head of Retail Banking.
Helen brings with her 24 years of experience in banking. She represented Great Britain in archery at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and went on to lead a distinguished career in financial services. She joins Starling from Santander, which she joined in 2007, where she was Head of Current Account Acquisition, Mortgage and Savings, rising to become Director of Products at Santander Business, Santander UK. Previously she undertook roles in Product, Pricing and Strategy at Alliance & Leicester and NatWest.
Helen’s achievements include launching the first ever digital mortgage application in the UK and the first high interest current account. More recently she launched the first cashback current account for UK small and medium-sized enterprises. At Santander, she helped build a Network to support women in their careers, which now has more than 3,200 members. She was recognised by Women in Banking and Finance in 2017 as a shortlisted finalist in their Champion of Women category.
With responsibility for developing Starling’s retail banking business, Helen will play a key role in growing the bank’s customer base as well as building on its reputation for innovation and customer service.

Whilst working at Alliance & Leicester, Helen represented Great Britain at archery, going on to achieve a world ranking of 19. “Being an Olympian teaches you resilience; true team working where honest feedback and challenge bring better results; and focus. They are all invaluable skills for success in business,” she said.
Born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, Helen, 44, describes her parents, both teachers, as her greatest inspiration. She was inspired to go into banking after doing a week’s work experience, while at school.
