Volante Technologies’ Nihit Ahuja & NatWest’s Lee McNabb on Future-Proofing Payments Architecture

Nihit Ahuja from Volante Technologies and Lee McNabb from NatWest discussed whether banks should build their own payment systems or buy them.

Ahuja said that banks need platforms that can grow and evolve, not just meet today’s needs like ISO 20022 and cloud ecosystems. If you don’t think about growth upfront, changes later to the architecture could be difficult and be costly. He said it’s also important to work well with your platform provider and make sure payments are their main specialism, not just something else they do.

McNabb chimed in, saying it’s all about weighing the costs. Sometimes, running things internally can be more cost effective whilst in other scenarios, it’s better to go with a specialist. McNabb adds that reviewing these choices every so often because what works now might not be the fit in the future.
