Freedom Holding Corp’s Blueprint for Building a Scalable Digital Financial Ecosystem
Timur Turlov and Renat Tukanov unpack the thinking behind the transformation of Freedom Holding Corp from a single-line brokerage business into one of the region’s most advanced multi-vertical digital ecosystems.
The core idea behind this evolution is trust as different financial products have very different dynamics when it comes to customer acquisition, retention, and credibility. Simple, everyday services such as payments, cards, or basic banking products are far easier for customers to understand and adopt. They also tend to carry a much higher level of trust than standalone investment or insurance offerings. By starting with these simpler products, Freedom Holding Corp was able to onboard customers at a lower cost and build long-term relationships before gradually introducing more complex services like brokerage, insurance, and long-term investments.
This layered approach allows each vertical to reinforce the others as once a customer is inside the ecosystem, many traditional friction points disappear. Payments no longer require repeated card entry, identity details don’t need to be re-submitted, and rarely used services such as buying airline or concert tickets become effortless when they are embedded into a banking app customers already use daily with convenience, speed, and familiarity replace repeated Google searches and forgotten passwords.
Loyalty also plays a critical role as cashback and rewards earned from lifestyle purchases flow directly into banking products, encouraging customers to keep funds within the ecosystem. Over time, this creates a virtuous cycle: frequent-use services drive engagement, trusted products reinforce confidence, and higher-value services benefit from both and with the result being stronger retention, higher cross-sell conversion, and a customer experience that feels cohesive rather than fragmented.
Underpinning all of this is technology and both speakers stress that scale is impossible without a deep, disciplined technology foundation. Architecture, infrastructure, security standards, and engineering culture must be in place long before advanced tools like AI are introduced as rushing innovation without this groundwork risks system failure, lost trust, and costly rebuilds later.
Technology, in Freedom Holding Corp’s view, is not just a support function but the backbone of the ecosystem as it requires a systematic approach, understanding how every component interacts, planning for change, and continuously evolving to meet new business and hardware realities. Done right, this foundation allows the business to move fast without breaking trust, and to keep expanding the ecosystem with confidence.
